PPE - Personal Protective Equipment

Updated: May 3, 2020

The novel coronavirus COVID-19 continues its spread globally. Public authorities are implementing various measures to contain or delay it, from complete or partial territorial lockdowns.

Personal Protective Equipment. While news and social media sources use the term PPE quite generally to refer to wearable devices or products that can prevent the transmission of viruses, there’s actually much more nuance governing the use of the term in the product branding and of course in marketing materials.

Wear with Ease

Under normal circumstances, for products such as medical-grade PPE, they have to meet certain government-regulated safety standards. Likewise, for products to be accepted and used by hospitals and healthcare providers, they need to meet safety standards, defined by authorised entities.

However, amid the COVID 19 pandemic, government agencies are working to make and communicate exceptions to these standards and to expedite what are usually slow and laborious certification processes. Similarly, some hospitals and other facilities are accepting non-medical PPE — including “homemade” masks and face shields, and non-indicated eye protection such as snow goggles.

PPE Production Hubs

China and India are two of the main global suppliers of PPE and medical equipment. India banned exports of certain masks, ventilators, raw material for masks and coveralls on 19 March. This added to the previous ban on exports of all personal protection equipment including clothing and masks used in healthcare activities, such as N-95 masks. At the same time, measures to stimulate domestic production of medical devices were announced.

WE ARE ON THE FRONTLINE OF THE COVID-19 RELIEF EFFORT..

As part of goodwill packages, the Chinese government has begun some shipments to destinations such as Iran, Serbia and Italy. China also sent a team of medical experts who handled the COVID-19 outbreak in China, to Italy.

Although PPEs are being resupplied, supplies are depleting fast. China produces half of the world’s supply of face masks. During the COVID-19 outbreak, China had to stop export of its face masks to the world. Production of face masks was twelve-fold after the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan. Now that COVID-19 incidences have gone down, China is exporting masks to countries that are requesting them.
